The rune tree is a system enabler, not a stat sheet
It's tempting to treat the rune tree like a passive board where you click "+5% damage" until it's full. That's the trap. Its most valuable nodes don't give stats at all — they unlock systems: extra party members, offline accumulation, automatic chest opening, extra skill slots. A few hundred gold spent on the right unlock outvalues thousands dumped into flat stat nodes. Spend with that in mind.
Priority order (the short version)
- Rune of Command → hero slots 2 and 3. Your biggest early power spike.
- Offline rewards (the Repose node and its prerequisites) → progress while closed.
- Far North automation → auto-open chests so AFK runs itself.
- Gold / XP nodes → snowball everything above.
- Rune of Awakening → an extra skill slot per hero (huge on Priest).
Hero slots — the Rune of Command
This is the rune that matters most. Each rank of the Rune of Command opens another party slot, taking you from a lone hero to a full three-hero team. Going from one to two heroes roughly doubles your output; the third slot is where the game really opens up. Costs escalate with each slot (the early ones are cheap, later ranks run into the tens of thousands of gold), so funnel your early Alchemy gold straight here.
Owning a class does not give you a slot. You could own all six heroes and still field only one until you buy the Rune of Command. Slots come from the rune; classes just fill them.
Offline rewards — the Repose chain
By default, a closed game earns you nothing. The offline-reward node fixes that, trickling XP and gold while you're away. It sits at the end of a short prerequisite chain (the Wealth and Expansion nodes open the path to Repose), so you buy two cheap setup runes to reach it. The individual costs are low — this is high value for the gold. Just don't expect miracles: offline still drops zero chests (see how the game works), so it's a top-up, not a replacement for leaving the game running.
Far North automation — auto-open chests
The Far North branch is what makes idling genuinely passive. Its runes auto-open your common and boss chests on a cooldown, so a minimised game farms loot without you. The cooldowns start fairly long (and shrink with investment), which is why this sits just below offline rewards in priority — it's a quality-of-life multiplier that pays off the longer you play. Once it's running, your AFK time converts straight into gear.
Gold & XP nodes — the snowball
With slots, offline and automation handled, pour the rest into the gold and experience nodes. These don't unlock anything, but they accelerate everything else: more gold means faster runes, more XP means faster levels and higher difficulties. They're the "fill in the gaps" investment once the system unlocks are done.
Rune of Awakening — the second skill slot
Awakening grants an extra skill slot per hero. It's good on everyone but transformative on the Priest, which can then heal and buff at the same time instead of choosing. Prioritise it once your core party and economy are set up; it's an "improve what you have" rune rather than an "unlock something new" one.
Priority by playtime
What to buy shifts as you progress. A rough map:
| Stage | Focus on | Skip for now |
|---|---|---|
| 0–20 h | Rune of Command (slots 2 & 3); offline-reward chain; a little Gold/XP | Deep stat nodes, Awakening |
| 20–50 h | Far North automation; Awakening (Priest first); Gold/XP scaling | Niche end-branches |
| 50 h+ | Remaining stat nodes, specialised branches, any higher Command ranks | — |
Don't spread thin across every flat-stat node before you've bought slots, offline and automation. A "+x% damage" node feels good but is far weaker than a whole extra hero.
FAQ
What runes should I unlock first?
Rune of Command for your 2nd and 3rd hero slots, then offline rewards, then Far North automation, then gold/XP nodes.
How do I unlock the offline-reward rune?
Buy its short prerequisite chain (the Wealth then Expansion nodes) to reach the Repose node. The runes themselves are cheap.
Does owning a class give a hero slot?
No — slots come only from the Rune of Command. Owning a class just lets you field it once a slot is open.
What level unlocks the rune tree?
It opens early, around level 3. The Cube follows at level 4.
