The campaign is 3 acts × 4 difficulties (Normal → Nightmare → Hell → Torment), about 120 stages. Difficulty, not stage number, is your real progression dial: push until clears slow down, then drop back and farm until your gear can take the next step.
How stages & acts are structured
Task Bar Hero's campaign is organised as three acts. Each act is a run of stages that ends in an Act Boss, and each act can be replayed on four difficulty tiers. That's roughly 120 stages in total once you count every act across every difficulty. You don't unlock new acts so much as re-run them harder — which is why difficulty matters more than the stage counter.
The four difficulties & enemy scaling
Stepping up a difficulty sharply raises enemy levels and the rewards they drop. The same stage can sit in the low 20s on Normal and leap into the 90s on Torment, so each tier is a real wall, not a formality.
| Difficulty | Rough enemy level | What it gates |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | ~20s | Learning the loop; first Act Bosses |
| Nightmare | ~40s | Better rarities start appearing |
| Hell | ~60s | Legendary+ gear and sockets matter |
| Torment | ~90s | Endgame loot and the rarest achievements |
The deeper structure of acts, the idle loop and offline behaviour is covered in how the game works.
Push or farm? The wall-test loop
The single biggest progression mistake is brute-forcing a stage your party can't clear cleanly. Income in this game scales with clears per hour, so a stage you barely survive actually slows you down. Use this loop instead:
1. Push up stages/difficulty until clears noticeably slow or your party starts taking real damage.
2. Drop back to your fastest reliable clear and farm there.
3. Spend the gold and chests on upgrades.
4. Re-test the wall. Repeat.
Finding that sweet-spot stage is its own small skill — the best farming stage guide covers it in full.
Breaking through a difficulty wall
When a difficulty stops you cold, work this checklist before forcing it again:
- Push gear to Legendary+ via Synthesis and sockets in the Cube
- Match affixes to each hero's role (items & rarity guide)
- Pour Alchemy gold into the rune tree — hero slots, automation, damage
- Unlock the third party slot (Rune of Command) and run a full tank + damage + Priest team
- Farm a fast stage for chests and feed the upgrade loop, then re-test the wall
Act Bosses & the end of each act
The final stage of every act is an Act Boss, challenged through the red portal for a soul stone. Beating one drops a guaranteed red chest with the best loot at your difficulty — the main reason to climb in the first place. Crucially, failing a boss costs nothing; you only spend a stone on a win, so test bosses freely. Full mechanics are in the bosses & soul stones guide.
Stuck on an act?
If a specific act wall won't budge, it's almost always a gear or party problem, not a stage problem. Drop down, farm chests with Far North auto-open running, upgrade in the Cube, and make sure you're fielding three heroes in the right roles. The rarest achievements come from clearing Act 3 bosses on the top difficulties, so there's a real reason to keep the loop turning.
FAQ
How many stages are there?
About 120 — 3 acts across 4 difficulties (Normal, Nightmare, Hell, Torment), each act ending in an Act Boss.
What order do the difficulties go in?
Normal → Nightmare → Hell → Torment. Each step sharply raises enemy levels and rewards.
Should I push to the highest stage I can beat?
No — farm your fastest reliable clear, not the hardest stage. Clears per hour beat raw stage level.
I'm walled on an act — what now?
Drop back, farm chests and gold, push gear to Legendary+ in the Cube, unlock more runes and the third party slot, then re-test the wall.
